Geometric Learning Bridges Mathematics and Statistics to Marine Biology and Geophysical Sciences

September 5, 2019

Tingran Gao, William H. Kruskal Instructor, has been developing geometric learning frameworks to analyze 3-D scans of complex biological surfaces. His research work recently led to a partnership with Prof. David Jablonski, William R. Kenan Jr. Distinguished Service Professor in the Department of Geophysical Sciences, whose research on evolution and extinction dynamics in marine life led to the creation of over 3,000 3-D images of shells using a campus micro-CT scanner, and the need to compare these three-dimensional shells to one another.  For more information, please visit https://news.uchicago.edu/story/3-d-imaging-ai-reveal-stories-hidden-shells.
