New and returning students are required to meet with advisors, register online, and submit advisor-approved registration forms to Zellencia Harris by Friday, September 24, at noon.

Online Orientation for International Students

New international students must complete the online orientation offered by the Office of International Affairs no later than Monday, September 27. See OIA’s website for details.
Required for: all new international students

Monday, 9/20

Breakfast – Meet Student Affairs Administrator, Zellencia Harris and CAM Director, Mary Silber at Pret a Manger for breakfast and a brief meet and greet.

Welcome Meeting for Incoming PhD Students – Meet with faculty, director, staff and current students in Computational and Applied Mathematics for introductions and an overview of the program.
Time: 9:30am-10:30am
Location: Jones 303

Campus Tour– Incoming students will be divided into small groups and led by current CAM PhD students on a walking tour of campus.
Time: 1:30pm-2:30pm

PSD Welcome & Orientation

The Division’s online orientation materials were sent to students on 9/2. Incoming MS and PhD students with a CNET ID should have received a Canvas invitation link. Please contact Zellencia Harris ASAP if you have not received the invitation.

In Person Orientation:

The Division plans to host an informal orientation event in the outdoor space behind Eckhardt Research Center. Students are welcome to arrive and leave any time within that time frame. In addition to meeting other incoming students, you will have the opportunity to meet the Dean of Students Office staff and other faculty and staff from the Division. We will be providing individually wrapped treats for incoming students and raffling off a few prizes for those who attend. This event is not required, but attendance is encouraged.

Graduate Student Opening Convocation (In-Person Event) – More than 2,000 incoming students from across UChicago's 12 graduate schools and divisions will join together to mark the beginning of the new academic year. The event will be hosted outdoors on the University's Main Quadrangles, and feature UChicago President Paul Alivisatos and other speakers to welcome you to our community. Following the Convocation, pick up a UChicagoGRAD T-shirt and light snacks at outdoor locations around the Main Quads. Register now>>

Wednesday, 9/22

Successful Collaboration and Overview of UChicago GRAD– A discussion on collaboration within CCAM programs and an overview of resources available through UChicago GRAD, including career resources. Required for all new CAM students.
Time: 11am
Location: Kent 107

Toyota Technological Institute at Chicago (TTIC) Mix and Mingle (virtual event)– TTIC welcomes new CAM and TTIC students and will provide a brief overview of some of the research currently being done. Students will also learn how they can be involved or join academic activity through the year.
Time: 1pm
Location: GatherTown (virtual)

Library Resources Information Session – Jennifer Hart, Mathematics, Statistics, and Computer Science Librarian, will give an overview of library services and resources available to all students.
Time: 2:30pm-3:30pm

Friday, 9/24

Fire Safety Training – Ian Hoppie, Laboratory Safety Specialist, will give a fire safety training presentation.

IT Informational Session (virtual event) – Ed Friedman, John Zekos, and Mitzi Nakatsuka will explain computational resources in the Department of the Statistics and across campus.
